Mainstream Canada has been recognized as one of the best companies in B.C. when it comes to employee health and safety.
Mainstream Canada, the second-largest producer of farmed salmon in British Columbia, received the FIOSA-MIOSA Safety Alliance's Certificate of Recognition (COR) earlier this year, one of only two large companies in B.C. to do so. So far, only six companies in B.C. have achieved COR certification.
"Our objective is to continue to maintain these high standards. With COR certification we get recognition from WorkSafeBC for our OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) program and we will save a significant amount of money; however, getting COR certified was not about the rebate, it was about setting a high standard of OHS to show our employees they are number one and that we do care," said Dave Samson, Mainstream Canada's Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
Representatives from FIOSA-MIOSA said Mainstream deserves to be proud of its achievement.
"We are very proud to have Mainstream Canada join the growing list of forward-thinking and safety-conscious companies in the Food & Beverage Processing and Manufacturing industries in B.C.," said John McMahon, Director of Operations and Marketing at FIOSA-MIOSA. "We welcome them to our COR Hall of Fame."
FIOSA and MIOSA are the Food Industry Occupational Safety Association and the Manufacturing Industry Occupational Safety Association of B.C. In 2007, the FIOSA - MIOSA Safety Alliance of BC signed an agreement with WorkSafeBC to develop an occupational health and safety association to promote safe work practices in B.C. workplaces. In addition to providing resources on reducing injuries and improving workplace safety, a key component of the agreement includes implementing and administering a Certificate of Recognition (COR) program for industry employers.
COR certification is awarded to employers who implement and maintain an occupational health and safety management system that exceeds regulatory requirements. COR-certified companies are also eligible for WorkSafeBC rebates.
Through its COR certification Mainstream has achieved a standard of excellence in its occupational health and safety and return to work management systems and shows that the company is emerging as a leader in managing workplace health and safety in the B.C. food processing industry.
Mainstream Canada is one of only six B.C. businesses in the COR Hall of Fame, and one of only two large B.C. businesses to achieve COR certification.
