Fish Health - Disease Prevention

We follow a number of standard operating procedures to prevent pathogens from causing diseases in our fish populations, and to deal with any issues that may arise.

Biosecurity

Biosecurity

Considerable efforts are made to limit the movement or transfer of any fish pathogens, which are present in the natural environment, between populations and between operations.

To accomplish this, many biosecurity procedures are followed including:

• Restricted movement of personnel between saltwater and freshwater operations

• Restricted movement of boats, personnel and equipment within saltwater operations

• Routine disinfection of equipment

• Disinfectant foot baths

• Hand-washing stations

• Segregation of mortalities

• Segregation of processing activities and containment of processing water

Vaccination

Fish Health Vaccination

We vaccinate each of our fish to prevent common fish diseases that our salmon can contract in the natural environment.

Vaccines are not drugs. They contain small amounts of the inactivated organisms that cause common diseases, so the inoculated individual can develop an immune response without contracting the disease.

Vaccinations are an important tool in maintaining fish health and significantly reduce the need for antibiotics in salmon farming.
